Abstract

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a serious human rights violation in many countries, including Indonesia. It affects survivors’ physical and psychological well-being and constrains women’s social, economic, and political participation. This study reviews the development of GBV research in Indonesia and identifies prevention strategies proposed in multidisciplinary literature. Using a qualitative descriptive literature review, we analyzed publications released between 2013 and 2024, including peer‑reviewed journal articles, research reports, and national and international institutional publications. The review shows that GBV occurs not only in domestic settings but also in public and digital spaces. Key drivers include patriarchal norms, unequal power relations, gender stereotypes, and gaps in survivor‑centered legal protection. Digital transformation has also enabled new forms of abuse, such as online gender‑based violence. Prevention strategies highlighted in the literature include strengthening regulations and enforcement, gender‑equality education, improving survivor support services, and enhancing community digital literacy. The findings underline the need for a coordinated multidisciplinary approach involving law, education, health, technology, and community actors to prevent GBV in Indonesia
